After your done recovering from New Year’s Eve, there’s not a whole lot to do on New Year’s Day other than watch NCAA Football Bowl games. Many bars are taking the night off to recover from the rowdiness of the night before and our calendar is telling me that there are only three shows in the DC metro area. One of which just happens to be the Wu-Tang Clan (minus the ODB of course). Wu-Tang will be rockin the 9:30 Club along with Cappadonna and DJ Mathematics. Doors open at 7pm. (more…)

Two things are inevitable on Wednesday night. First, the year will end a new one will begin. Second, most people will go out to a bar somewhere and pay a huge cover to get in. If you are going to pay a lot of money to party, you might as well get some live music with it. Below are some of the more exciting shows to ring in 2009. For more shows check-out the Calendar.

Let’s be honest, no one wants to do any work between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. People take vacation and it makes it that much more unbearable for those who have to work. One solution to this is to go out and have a good time regardless of whether or not you have to work. You can finish things in 2009, that’s what the New Year is all about.
Now that we’ve determined that you are going to play instead of work going into the new year, its time to decide where to go. If you’re in Northern Virginia, the place to go on Tuesday, December 30th is Jammin’ Java in Vienna. Three innovative groups will be playing. The Echo Boom (not to be confused with the Echo Boomers) are a group that blends rock, funk and hip-hop coming from Takoma Park, MD. Violet Says 5 has a very similar style to The Echo Boom also coming from the Washington DC area. Danni Rosner from Fairfax/Arlington, VA rounds out the three bands with her soulful voice. Show starts at 8pm! (more…)

Funk music is usually bass driven. Bootsy Collins brought the bass to the front with slap bass and it has been the focus point since. Soulive however has some of the funkiest beats and they do it without a bass player. This instrumental soul/funk group started as a trio of guitar, organ and drums and now includes a sax plus special guests. This Sunday December 28th, Soulive will be rockin’ the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Doors open at 7:00pm. Get there early because they have DJ Rekha opening the show. Who knows who will show as a special guest?

On Saturday, December 27th, reggae will arrive at the State Theatre in Falls Church, VA. SOJA (Soldiers of Jah Army) and the Fear Nuttin’ Band are playing two shows, one at 4:30pm and the late show at 9:00pm. They are two great reggae groups – check ‘em out. Tickets cost $25 at the door (must be 21 and up to get in).

Christmas night can be a great night for everyone to go out and party. So unless you are busy going to church or stuck with family for a great sober night, then you’ll want to go to one of these two shows (feel free to bring your family or church groups along). In Fairfax, VA, NUMA, The Blackjacks and Redshift are rocking out Fat Tuesday’s. The show starts at 9pm and Fat Tuesday’s is really making itself known as the place to see live music in Fairfax. Look at their calendar, its jammed pack.
Further South in Richmond, Sideshow Addiction is playing at Cary Street Cafe at 10pm. This is the bands last show, so if you’ve never seen them (or just love to shake it to their grooves) make sure you make it to this show. Sideshow Addiction started as a Grateful Dead cover band and evolved into a great regional jam band playing shows and festivals along the East Coast. Definitely a Christmas treat. (more…)
