STS9 at 9:30 Club

Sound Tribe Sector Nine (STS9) is on tour and they are coming through the DC area in mid-March. STS9 will be playing two nights (March 13th and March 14th) at the 9:30 Club following a show in Norfolk, VA at the Norva. I have had the chance to catch them 3 times in three different states (NC, GA and DC). By far the best show that I saw was right here at the 9:30 Club. They are doing something funky with tickets (I’m not used to seeing multiple ticket prices for a show like this at the 9:30 Club). At any rate, both shows should be great. Opening act for the 13th is Two Fresh and the 14th is Ana Sia. More tour dates after the jump. (more…)

Five Nights of Thievery Corporation

Generally, when Thievery Corporation comes to the 9:30 Club, they play more than one, but this time around their playing five nights! That is Wednesday January 20th- Sunday January 24th. While most of the shows are already sold-out, you can still get tickets to the Sunday show. Each night they are playing with Ocote Soul Sounds . If you like Thievery Corporation and don’t have tickets to a show, get them now before all five nights are sold out.

The Merger that won’t quit

Last March I commented on the possibility of a merger between Live Nation and TicketMaster, a move that would combine the largest concert promoter with the largest ticketing company. Unfortunately, while the merger hasn’t happened, it is still under review and seems inevitable. What made me think of this was an email recently sent-out on the 9:30 Club email list (included below). In that email 9:30 Club makes its position very strong: the merger must be opposed because of the effects it would have on consumers – i.e. prices for concerts would go up. This is a perspective I share and feel that it warrants support; however, (more…)

The Roots on Tour

If you can’t get enough of The Roots five nights a week on Jimmy Fallon’s show (which you probably can’t), you’re in luck as they hit a mini-tour during their holiday break from the show. No doubt they’ll be bumpin’ their yet-to-be-released-album “How I Got Over” along the way. They’re going to be stopping in DC at the 9:30 Club twice (December 29th and December 30th). Doors open at 7pm for both shows and tickets are $45. I’ve seen the band at 9:30 club twice and both shows were The Roots at their best – I have seen them other times at other places and the shows can’t compare. While it is only a 5 stop, 6 night tour, they are going from coast to coast (dates after the jump). (more…)

Xavier Rudd Bringing the Didgeridoo to 9:30 Club

Are you in the mood for some innovative music this weekend? Then look no further than the 9:30 Club. This Saturday, August 1st, Australian native Xavier Rudd is going to be playing at the club promoting his most recent album Dark Shades of Blue. Rudd plays an interesting mix of progressive rock that features the Didgeridoo (an Aboriginal instrument found in Australia). The uniqueness of the music doesn’t stop at the incorporation of the Didgeridoo though as Rudd’s main instrument is guitar and he is known to also play Weissenborn slide guitars, stomp box, harmonica, and percussion. While Rudd has achieved stardom back in Australia, he is hoping that this American tour (which started back on June 18th) will raise his popularity in the States. Fans of jam bands will find themselves more than happy with Rudd’s shows. Be sure to make it out to 9:30 Club on Saturday night to catch Rudd with Jeremy Fisher. Tickets are $20, but them here. George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic

One of the most outrageous funk acts of the last  3 and a half decades has been George Clinton and his various groups. George Clinton is currently touring with Parliament Funkadelic and is making two stops in the DC area. Tonight, February 21st, he’ll be “tearin’ the roof” off of Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD. Next week, Friday, February 27th, the Mothership will land at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. For the 9:30 show, Sam H will be opening up – Doors open at 8pm. Two funk filled nights with the funkiest man in the universe. The 9:30 Club show will be my first live George Clinton experience, I can’t wait!

Mos Def’s coming to DC

One of the dopest hip-hop acts on the screne is coming to Washington, DC in February. Mos Def is playing at the 9:30 Club on Monday, February 23rd. If you want to go, I’d get tickets now because 9:30 Club has been selling out a lot of shows lately. Speaking of sold-out shows, Thievery Corporation sold-out 5 consecutive shows there this week. During the Inauguration there were also quite a few sold-out shows there including The Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow, and Talib Kweli. Just trying to see that if you want tickets to see Mos Def, get them while they’re there.

Reggae and Punk-Ska at 9:30 Club

On Friday night, if you have any partying left in you after staying out until 4am at the DC bars for the Inauguration, then you might want to check out the 9:30 Club. Lionize will be playing to promote their new album “Space Pope and the Glass Machine“. I caught them two weeks ago opening up for the Pietasters, these guys are for real. Their solid grooves are punctuated by a conscious dispostion – I definitely preferred their show over the Pie Tasters (I really don’t get the punk “skanking” which is nothing like real reggae skanking). Anyway if you prefer punk-ska, there’s going to be some of that at 9:30 Club Friday with The Players Band. Doors 8pm, Can’t Hang 9pm, The Players Band 9:45pm and Lionize starts around 11pm. Tickets here. (more…)

Just Announced at 9:30 Club

I was beginning to wonder if the 9:30 Club was going to do anything the night of the Inauguration. It turns out they were planning a huge show! The night of the Inauguration 9:30 Club (with the help of CK One) will host Talib Kweli, Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Dresden Dolls, The Honey Brothers and Jamie Burke. The doors will open for the show at 8:00pm Tuesday, January 20th. I’ve been dying to see Kweli, but he hasn’t been DC in a while. Hopefully, tickets won’t be as difficult to get as some of the other shows that have been sold-out in minutes. Just in case, you may want to log-on to get tickets right when they go onsale at 10:00am Thursday, January 15th.

Rock the Vote Inaugural Ball – 9:30 Club

I was beginning to wonder what the 9:30 Club had in store for the Inauguration, but then I got an email about their line-up. The “Hey, America Feels Kinda Cool Again” Inaugural Gala will be at the 9:30 club on Monday January 19th (aka. MLK Day or Inauguration Eve). This show is sponsored by Rock the Vote and the Rock the Vote organization will receive net proceeds from the concert. The big news about this show is that BEASTIE BOYS, SHERYL CROW and CITIZEN COPE will be performing. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm – we have no idea how late these shows will be going at this point because bars can sell alcohol until 4am.

This is going to be a huge show. Don’t miss it! However, if you want tickets, act soon. Tickes go on sale at 10am on Saturday, January 10th.
