Rebirth Brass Band on Thursday @ The State Theatre

New Orleans has been struggling since Katrina, but unfortunately New Orleans has always been struggling. One of the ways people dealt with problems was to develop some of the only music that America can claim as its own. After the hurricane, there were many people that feared that the culture would be lost as the city is rebuilt with mansions, casinos and expensive condos. The Big Easy remains a place in desperate need of the thriving music culture that made it world famous. Rebirth Brass Band drummer Derrick Tabb is trying to do something about it. When Tabb is in town, he’s hard at work keeping kids off the street by teaching them to play music. One way to keep kids motivated is to keep them playing music every weekday from 4-7pm in the band room. No band geeks here – just kids gettin’ funky! Check-out Tabb and the Rebirth Brass Band this Thursday at The State Theatre. Doors open at 7pm – Show starts at 9pm.

Maceo Parker at The State Theatre

Funk master Maceo Parker is coming to Falls Church, VA on Saturday, March 14th. Few artists have done as much for funk music as Maceo Parker. The former James Brown sax player is known not only for funky music, but also funky lyrics (i.e. “Elephant’s Foot“). The State Theatre show starts at 9:00pm, doors open at 7:00pm. Tickets are $26. The State Theatre has the potential to be a great venue, but they usually do themselves a disservice by having mediocore to crappy shows. Maceo is a move in the right direction, maybe we could get some more shows like this at the State Theatre after Maceo rocks the house.

So much going on Saturday August 16th

Back in March, Victor Wooten rocked the State Theatre with his band by making the bass the lead instrument in the group. Now he’s back in northern Virginia with two of the greatest musicians to play the bass. Vic will be performing with Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke at Wolf Trap on Saturday, August 16th at Wolf Trap beginning at 8:00pm (don’t forget to BYOB!).

Funk jazz fans will be happy as Garage a Trois rock the State Theatre in Falls Church at 9:00pm (doors open at 7:00pm).

The Nissan Pavilion will be  hosting a great rock show with Maroon 5, Counting Crows and Sara Bareilles. The gates open for the show at 6:00pm. As always at Nissan Pavillion, be prepared for traffic.

Finally, The Legends of Hip-Hop show is going down at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, MD. This show features Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Whodini, Mc Lyte and Doug E Fresh. Gates open for this show at 5:30pm.

Friday, Big Night for Local music

This is looking like its going to be a music packed weekend. It starts off big on Friday with three local music shows. First, Redshift will be playing at the 9:30 Club for the first time with The War Within and Rome in a Day. Doors open at 6:00pm for that show. These are three up-and-coming local bands that you’ll want to catch before they are touring nationally.

Second, Future is playing at the State Theatre in Falls Church with Poor Mans Lobster and Panacea at 8:00pm. I saw Future play with Poor Man’s Lobster at T.T. Reynold’s and it was one of the best local performances I have seen in a long time. Be sure to check these guys out.

Third, a local favorite, The Speaks, is playing at The Auld Shebeen with JunkFood and Klepto Radio starting at 8:00pm. It should be a good show and proves that music still exists in the City of Fairfax.

For all of the Beatles  fans out there, Thursday night should be a great night for you. Rain will be playing at Wolf Trap beginning at 8pm and their music is focused on bringing you the  “Beatles Experience”. What does that mean? Well, it means that they are a cover band that is dedicated to playing only music performed by The Beatles.  If you love the Beatles and want to sing along to your favorite tunes, go to Wolf Trap and rock-out to Rain and hopefully it doesn’t rain on the show.

Grateful Dead covers

Unfortunately Jerry Garcia is no longer with us, so it is impossible to see the Grateful Dead play in its entirety. However, there are quite a few bands that dedicate their performances entirely to the music of the Grateful Dead. Tonight, one of those bands, Dark Star Orchestra, is playing at The State Theatre in Falls Church, VA. Tickets are $25, ages 18+. Doors open @ 6pm, show starts at 8pm. Keep in mind that Dark Star Orchestra doesn’t just play Grateful Dead songs, they recreate entire shows by playing different Grateful Dead set-lists from the Grateful Dead’s 2500+ performances.
