John Legend coming to MPP

On Friday, July 17th, John Legend will bring his band to the Merriweather Post Pavillion at 7:30pm. Legend has been touring to sell his 2008 release Revolver. While John Legend’s voice is enough of a reason to get anyone into the crowd, also know that his summer tour is part of a “green” promotion. The “Greening” tour means that the band is performing “Carbon-Neutral concerts – offsetting CO2 emissions from venue energy use, buses and trucks, flights and hotel accommodations by supporting renewable energy projects.” One of the new songs that he has recently recorded has been leaked to the public; check-out “When it Rains” here. It’s my understanding that he’s also been playing “When it Rains” along with other new songs at his live shows.

Outdoor Concerts are comming

Spring is in the air (or is at least fighting to be in the air). As the temperatures rise and outdoor concerts swell in numbers, MusicDetour wants to make sure that we keep you posted on what’s going on. The three big outdoor venues in the DC Area (The Filene Center at Wolftrap, The Merriweather Pavillion and The Nissan Pavilion) are all beginning to list their shows, be sure to check their schedules updated on the venue pages. This weekend it’s Shamrock Fest and while the weather may not be great, this festival is always a good time. We are also listing summer music festivals in the DC area on the Summer Music Festivals 2009 page on the MusicDetour blog. Check there for all of the summer festivals and make sure you keep us posted on festivals happening in your neck of the woods. (more…)

First Merriweather Show Announced: Fall Out Boy

While we are stuck in the middle of winter with snow and ice storms (and the President mocking our laughable ability to deal with winter weather), there is light at the end of tunnel. I revel in watching music outdoors and The Merriweather Post Pavillion has just announced its first show of the year. If you’re a fan of pop-punk, mark your calendars for April 25th when Fall Out Boy, Cobra Starship, All Time Low and Hey Monday will help open-up Merriweather for the season. The gates open at 5:00pm, so arrive early and tailgate (does MPP allow tailgating?). Tickets go onsale January 31st at 10am. (more…)

Chick Corea and Return to Forever

Return to Forever was one of the founding fusion bands in the early ’70s. Following in the footsteps of Miles Davis’ electric bands of the 1960s, Return to Forever combined some of the great young jazz musicians who were interested in exploring the boundaries of jazz by combining it with electric instruments. Chick Corea has been one of the most successful jazz musicians at exploring those boundaries and has filled the shoes of Miles Davis in mentoring younger musicians.

On Monday, August 4th, Return to Forever is bringing their reunion tour to the DC area by performing at the Merriweather Post Pavillion. Its not everyday that you can catch a jazz group playing such a large venue. The gates open at 6:30pm. Be sure to catch this legendary group as their may not be anymore chances to see them. (more…)

Jill Scott w/ The Roots

After seeing Erykah Badu with The Roots in Richmond, I can only imagine how great of a show is in store this Saturday, August 2nd. The Roots will share the stage with not only Jill Scott, but also Chuck Brown at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. This will be a very high energy show. No one sings with as much body and soul in her voice as Jill Scott. I don’t think that we’ll be lucky enough to have everyone on the stage at the same time, but I have no doubt that this show will rock. This show will be locking down Hip-Hop, Go-Go, R&B and Soul. Also performing is Estelle. (more…)

Rock the Bells

There is a traveling festival passing through the DC region this coming weekend as Rock the Bells visits the Merriweather Post Pavillion. Rock the Bells is a Hip-Hop festival that began in California in 2004 andbegan touring in 2006 to get to fans across the country. Wu Tang Clan used Rock the Bells in 2004 to play some reunion shows (and has done so several times since then). Last year the festival was notable because it brought Rage Against the Machine back together to play two shows. This year A Tribe Called Quest, Nas and Mos Def are the featured artists on tour with about 20 acts all together on two stages. The gates open at Merriweather Post Pavillion at 11am. Get there early and “rock the bells” all day.

Three Very Different Shows

Sometimes weeks go by without any worthwhile music happening in the DC Metro region, but tonight, July 16th, there are three different big shows going on (not to mention a bunch of great small ones). First, Wolf Trap has yet another classic R&B group, Earth, Wind and Fire, playing at 8:00pm. Earth, Wind and Fire is one of the bands that my Dad introduced me to as a kid that really got me interested in music.

Second, The Warped Tour is coming to the Merriweather Post Pavillion. (more…)
